Have you heard of environmental security?
A brief history: international security studies were at the center of the debate during the Cold War, with the subject being more related to military strategy at the top echelon of the military.
After the 1960s, with greater environmental awareness in developed countries, the subject became more widely known to the general public. Security then began to go beyond preventing wars between countries and began to be questioned by individuals.
What is environmental security: a radar that scans the threats posed by environmental events and trends to individuals, communities, or nations. It impacts human conflicts, international relations, and the environment, going beyond state borders. To this end, the United Nations (UN), in 2002, introduced the “Millennium Project”, which includes several measures to fight poverty and combat hunger.
Environmental security is thus one of the tools to achieve these goals, by preventing military damage to the environment and protecting it because of its moral value. Climate change is a threat to environmental security, and the ways to reduce the risks to the population are through food, water, and energy security (also cited in the UN Development Goals).
How Water & Beyond complies with this philosophy: we believe that projects should not only be a means to increase productivity, but a way to respect the working environment, taking into consideration the health of the soil, the air, and the people who live there. Whether through our genetic studies, breeding techniques, or impact assessments, we take into account the well-being of the elements involved, synthetically seeking a viable solution to the client’s demand.
